Meghan’s Son

What happens when loyalty to family, church, and community begins to require silence about the truth?

Meghan Orr is raised to obey.

Her father’s sermons.

Her church’s rules.

Her community’s expectations.

Then the boy she loves is murdered.

As whispers begin pointing back toward the church and the people around it, Meghan’s trust in the world that formed her begins to break.

Pregnant and increasingly certain that important truths are being hidden, she leaves the life she has known and begins building another.

Over the next fourteen years, Meghan pursues an education, creates a new future for herself and her son, and quietly continues investigating the events that changed both of their lives.

What she uncovers reaches beyond one death.

Financial wrongdoing, institutional secrecy, and old loyalties begin connecting in ways that suggest the past was never as settled as everyone wanted it to appear.

But the closer Meghan gets to the truth, the more dangerous the search becomes.

Eventually, finishing the investigation matters less than protecting the one person who has become the center of her life:

her son, William Franklin Orr.

Beneath the Story

Meghan’s Son is a family mystery about truth, institutional power, obedience, motherhood, and the cost of refusing silence.

It asks:

  • What happens when the institution that taught you right from wrong becomes something you no longer trust?
  • When does obedience become complicity?
  • How much truth is a person willing to pursue when the cost becomes personal?
  • What responsibility does a parent have to protect a child from dangers tied to the past?
  • Can loyalty survive betrayal?
  • What happens when exposing wrongdoing threatens not only reputations, but family and community bonds?

Meghan’s struggle is not only to discover what happened.

It is to decide what she owes the truth—and what she owes her son.

From Richard

Meghan’s Son grew from my interest in what happens when a person begins questioning the institutions and loyalties that once seemed unquestionable.

Meghan’s search for truth becomes inseparable from her role as a mother. She wants answers, but she also has to decide how much risk those answers are worth when another life depends on her.

The novel explores belief, secrecy, institutional power, family loyalty, and the difficult line between pursuing the truth and protecting the people we love.
