The Boaz Scholar

What happens when a teenager who trusts evidence and reason is dropped into a world shaped by belief, rivalry, violence, and secrets?

Mia Hudson is a precocious Chicago teenager with a growing love of science.

Then her family moves to Boaz, Alabama, for a year.

At school, Mia finds herself navigating a very different world—one shaped by small-town loyalties, religious certainty, football culture, and teenage rivalries.

After agreeing to tutor star football player Adam Brown, Mia becomes the target of five girls who resent her growing closeness to him. Their hostility turns violent when Mia is brutally assaulted in the girls’ locker room.

The attack leaves her shaken, angry, and determined to see her attackers held accountable.

Then Jessica Miller—the preacher’s daughter who helped set the violence in motion—is kidnapped by a dangerous parolee.

Suddenly Mia is forced to confront a harder question.

What does justice require when the person in danger is someone who once hurt you?

Using the same curiosity, discipline, and analytical mind that draw her toward science, Mia begins piecing together a mystery that local authorities have barely started to understand.

Along the way, her relationship with Adam grows into something neither of them expected.

Beneath the Story

The Boaz Scholar is a mystery and coming-of-age story about justice, empathy, belief, evidence, loyalty, and the difficult choices that follow harm.

It asks:

  • What happens when the person who wronged you later needs your help?
  • Can the desire for justice coexist with compassion?
  • How should evidence and reason guide us when emotion points somewhere else?
  • What responsibility does a person have toward someone they have every reason to resent?
  • How much of identity is shaped by family, faith, community, and expectation?
  • Can suffering enlarge a person’s conscience rather than harden it?

Mia’s story places justice, empathy, belief, evidence, loyalty, and responsibility in direct tension.

From Richard

The Boaz Scholar gave me a way to explore a question that continues to interest me: what happens when justice and compassion seem to point in different directions?

Mia is intelligent, curious, and drawn to evidence, but the story asks more of her than simply solving a problem.

After being harmed, she has every reason to want accountability. Then circumstances force her to decide whether another person’s wrongdoing changes what that person deserves when danger comes.

The novel also explores belief and reason, teenage loyalty, first love, and the way difficult experiences can alter how a young person understands both other people and herself.
